Warming Tray Crayon Prints

Have you ever used  a warming tray to create art? A long time a go my husband and I designed our wedding invitations using this technique.  My daughter and I have used warming tray and crayons many times before, but this time we made warming tray prints.

To create warming tray prints you need:
old warming tray (from thrift store)
peeled crayons (soak in water to make them easier to peel)
paper
spatula

FIrst you draw directly on the warming tray with the crayons.  The crayons melt as you draw. Be careful with little ones! Do not touch the warming tray!

Then, place a paper over your crayon drawing to create a print. Use a spatula to help transfer the crayon to the paper better.

Here is C's first experimental melted crayon print.

You can either keep adding crayon to the previous drawing or you can wipe the tray clean and start fresh.

Here are some of our finished Melted Crayon Prints:

Beautiful experimentation.

These warming tray prints became beautiful greeting cards.... We just loved the process!

Shaving Cream Marbled Easter Egg Cards

We created some Easter Egg greeting cards this past week. We used our shaving cream marbled papers left over from when we made Shaving Cream Marbled Hearts and Shaving Cream Marbled Rainbows. If you haven't seen our posts on shaving cream marbling, be sure to check out the great tutorials on it in each post here and here.

To get started, we first gathered our wonderful supply of shaving cream marbled papers.  Then we cut out a bunch of Easter Eggs that could fit on a greeting card.  Some small, medium, and large sizes.  For younger children you may want to have the eggs already cut out.

Then you can either buy pre-made blank greeting cards or just fold a piece of paper in half to create a card size of your choice.  We used Glue Sticks to adhere the marble paper eggs to our cards.  Glue sticks worked really well for this process.

We tried various different egg arrangements.  C enjoyed this process of collaging the paper eggs together.

Ta-da! Here are some of our finished cards! Ready to send out or give to friends and family for Easter!

Happy Easter!

Inspiration to Create Birthday Cards

I'm a greeting card collector. I love browsing the aisles of greeting cards and over the years I have found many favorite greeting card artists that I LOVE.  My most favorite is artist: Masha Dyans. We used one of her card designs as inspiration to create watercolor birthday cake cards. I love her designs.  They are simple, unique and whimsical. Who wouldn't be inspired by this delicious rainbow birthday cake?

Here is a collection of some of our birthday designs we did in Masha Dyan's style.  We used watercolor paints and folded card stock to create the cards (you could use any type of paper).  Before we began, I explained to my daughter that an artist designed these cards just like we did when we were drawing owls. We often have this discussion and she always asks me if an artist designed something.

This is my favorite one by C.  I love the expression and movement in her beautiful birthday cake.

Here is one of mine.  I like mine, but feel I need to put a little more life in it as compared to C's card above.  Children always have more expression in their art work and that is why I love children's art!

Here is just a sampling of Masha Dyan's work that I have collected.  Isn't it FABULOUS?  If you want to check more of her work out go to her site here.  She has a facebook fan page too here.  Besides greeting cards Masha also does home decor and apparel.

Most recently I found out Masha has done a children's book too called: Razzle-Dazzle Ruby.  Here is a video preview of it and I can't wait to see it in person!

Happy Birthday to all my friends and family with birthdays coming up! (You might just receive on of these cards.) The more I look at Masha Dyan's work I am inspired.

Paint Chip Valentine Cards

A few days ago we created Paint Chip Valentine's!!! (I have a thing for Paint Chip Projects if you haven't noticed yet!) We've been getting into the spirit of Valentine's Day by putting up our Heart decorations and by making Snowy Hearts.  C was super excited to get our Valentine making underway since we just took down our X-mas decorations last week.  To create the hearts on our cards we used a mixture of construction paper and paint chips (paint samples).  We began by cutting a zillion hearts!  We folded our papers and I drew a half of a heart so that my daughter could easily cut them out by herself.

We glued the cut out hearts on our blank cards.  I happened to have some red, purple, and white blank cards, but you could use folded construction paper too.  I talked about overlapping and arrangement of the hearts  before actually gluing.  C seemed to grasp the concept most of the time.

Here are some of our finished cards. I love how they look!!!

The next day we added some Metallic Markers to our Valentines for an extra special touch! We used these metallic markers on our Spin Art Valentine's from last year too.

Stay Tuned for more Heart and Valentine related posts!

Spin Art Christmas Tree Cards

We've been making Christmas cards!  Have you sent out your Christmas cards or do you even send them? There are just too many things to do for the Holiday Season! Is anyone ever done with everything??? I enjoy sending Christmas cards,  but agree that it can be just another added thing that we all think we must do! (Kudos to those who just agree to not send them!)  Cassie and I spent a morning creating these cards using our spin art scraps from our Spin Art Christmas Trees from last week!

Here are all the scraps that we had left....I knew that we could use them for something!!!

So basically we cut out triangle shapes from the scraps and you could use any kind of paper because I'm sure you all don't just have spin art scraps on hand! (but you might!)

Then we added a brown construction paper tree trunk an white cotton for snow!

Then we used q-tips and paint for the light and ornaments and a star sticker for the top! Simple and sweet!

Here is another. You can cut out all different types of triangular shapes: tall , wide, curvy, etc.

Here are a bunch we did!

I have a feeling we'll be making more Christmas cards!

What do you think?

What is your take on sending Christmas Cards???

Coffee Filter Turkey Cards

This past weekend we made Thanksgiving cards with coffee filters, watercolor paints, and paper! I love using coffee filters for art because they are cheap and accessible!  We had quite an assembly line going and created over 20 or so cards!!! WOW!  C enjoyed making these turkey cards quite a bit!  We were inspired by Dilly Dali Art and their Spin Art Turkeys! They made Turkey Table Toppers.  Here is one of our finished cards.

First we painted coffee filters with watercolor paints.  Make sure to have newspaper underneath because they will soak through.

When the coffee filters are dry, cut them all in half like this.

Then glue the half of the coffee filter on a folded card or any paper if you don't want it to be a card.

Tear a piece of brown tissue paper (or construction paper) for the head.  We used two paper punch holes for the eyes and added black dots. You could use googly eyes too.

Now add a red piece of tissue paper for the wattle and a yellow triangle (and nostril holes) for the beak.

Finally, add lines for feathers and crumple brown tissue paper for the wings.  You could use real feathers too.  We drew the legs on and added grass for a background.  Simple and sweet! Very cute!

More cuteness!

They are adorable! Aren't they?  Don't you wish that you were receiving one?

Happy Thanksgiving!!!
