Metallic Painted Easter Eggs

We made a mixture of commercially dyed and metallic painted Easter eggs and they turned out BEAUTIFUL! I bought the 24 Karat Easter Egg Coloring Kit which is not rated very well by Amazon.com, but we painted our eggs multicolored and we had better results than our single color metallic eggs. We even made paintings on paper with our left over paint which you can see at the end of the post.

C happily painting her eggs. She had so much fun!

She enjoyed the commercial dyes PAAS kit too.

We even painted with the metallic colors over the Commercially dyed eggs which gave a nice background color to some of the eggs.
Lastly, we used the leftover Metallic colors to make some wonderful paintings! Mom's painting below.

Bubble Printed Valentine Hearts

My all time most popular post on the The Chocolate Muffin Tree is Bubble Printing and we revisited this technique just recently to create some Valentine Hearts. They turned out beautifully.
Materials Needed:
(Per color you need)
1/2 cup water
2 Tablespoons tempera paint
few squirts of dish soap
containers
straws
paper

We made Bubble Prints in this post here if you want to follow the tutorial with pictures. Basically you mix up the ingredients above in each container per each color. Then you blow into the mixture like you were blowing bubbles in milk (watch that little ones don't suck up the soapy mixture) and place a paper over the colored bubbles to create a print. The print is created as the bubbles pop. Each time you'll need to blow more bubbles to create more prints.

After you have a bunch of bubble printed papers, you can use them to create heart shapes.  We used construction paper in Valentine colors to frame our hearts. You could make these hearts into Greeting Cards or even Heart Garland.

Sweet Little Heart Cookies

We've made this recipe the past few years from Family Fun Magazine as Santa Hats, but since we forgot to make them for Christmas I told my daughter we could make a heart version of these for a Valentine Heart Cookie. They are basically a Meringue Cookie made with egg whites and sugar. Here is how they turned out:

Ingredients Needed:
2 egg whites, at room temperature
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup sugar
Red colored sugar
parchment paper

First heat the oven to 200 degrees F.  Then beat the egg whites until soft peaks form.  After that, add the cream of tartar, vanilla extract, and 1/2 sugar. Continue to beat until peaks stiffen.  Then we put the mixture into a gallon size plastic bag and cut a corner off the bag for a makeshift piping bag.

Then on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet, pipe the hearts with the bag filled with the egg white mixture.

Next, fill the inside of the heart like this.

Here is C hard at work in the process.

Lastly, sprinkle the colored sugar on the hearts and cook for 1 hour and 20 minutes at 200 degrees F. Cook them until they are hard, but not browned. The recipe advised to turn off the oven and let the cookies sit for an hour before removing. ***We took them right out and they were fine.
My daughter loves these sweet cookies and we already need to make some more!

Contact Paper Ornaments

Want a quick way to make ornaments with your children? Well,  make some Contact Paper Ornaments. They are so easy to make.  My daughter loves to draw so this was a fun way to incorporate her drawings into some fun tree decorations.

For Contact Paper Ornaments you'll need :

-White paper or card stock
-markers or crayons
-contact paper
-hole puncher
-wire or pipe cleaners

First, start drawing lots of fun Holiday or Winter themed ideas onto white paper or card stock. We did this together.  I started to draw,  and then my six year old joined in.  Lots of Christmas trees and candy canes.

Santa and reindeer.

Then after you have a bunch of drawings, cover each side of the drawing with contact paper.

Lastly, cut around the drawings,  punch a hole, and then add wire or pipe cleaners for hanging. They are ready to hang or to be given as unique gifts that I know many people will truly LOVE!

Crayon Shaving Decorated Easter Eggs

I think this is our last egg decorating idea for the year.  We created Bleeding Tissue Decorated Easter Eggs and Hot Easter Eggs Decorated With Crayon too.  These Crayon Shaving Decorated Easter Eggs didn't turn out exactly how I expected,  but they still had pretty results and it was an enjoyable process.

Materials Needed:
old grater
broken crayons
hard boiled eggs that are still warm
paper towels

First, we used an old grater to grate some old crayons. This process of grating crayons was a big hit as it was for grating soap for Bath Crayons.

Then after hard boiling the eggs we let them cool a bit. We placed the eggs on a paper towel/napkin and sprinkled them with the crayon shavings

We let the crayon shavings melt which was kind of cool to observe.

Then we wrapped the egg in the paper towel to kind of get the crayon shavings to spread around the egg.  You can experiment with whatever method you like.

After wrapping and kind of rolling around the egg,  we unwrapped the eggs to find these swirly and colorful results.  The crayon was pretty thick on the eggs so I wasn't sure about eating these eggs.  It was a fun process though. What do you think?

What is your favorite way to decorate Easter Eggs?

Crayon Resist Easter Eggs

We did this so simple egg decoration.  The process of crayon resist is always fun and adds a little magic into any art project involving watercolor paint.

For this project you'll need:

white paper
an egg shape pattern
white crayons/or other colors
watercolor paints/paint brushes
water

First, either have an egg shape already cut out or have a child trace an egg pattern onto white paper.

Then begin decorating/ designing your egg with white crayon by pressing hard.  The white crayon can only be seen if you look at the paper to the side, but it has the coolest effect.   You can use any color of crayon, but the white is the most magical.  As an art teacher,  I have had great results with Neon crayons too.  They really glow with dark paint.

After designing, take watercolor paint and brush over the crayon and the crayon should resist the paint. Make sure the paint is watery or the paint will cover the crayon. Never use washable crayons with this process because the crayon designs will disappear.

Here are our finished crayon resist eggs! Always beautiful!

Happy Easter!

Shaving Cream Marbled Easter Egg Cards

We created some Easter Egg greeting cards this past week. We used our shaving cream marbled papers left over from when we made Shaving Cream Marbled Hearts and Shaving Cream Marbled Rainbows. If you haven't seen our posts on shaving cream marbling, be sure to check out the great tutorials on it in each post here and here.

To get started, we first gathered our wonderful supply of shaving cream marbled papers.  Then we cut out a bunch of Easter Eggs that could fit on a greeting card.  Some small, medium, and large sizes.  For younger children you may want to have the eggs already cut out.

Then you can either buy pre-made blank greeting cards or just fold a piece of paper in half to create a card size of your choice.  We used Glue Sticks to adhere the marble paper eggs to our cards.  Glue sticks worked really well for this process.

We tried various different egg arrangements.  C enjoyed this process of collaging the paper eggs together.

Ta-da! Here are some of our finished cards! Ready to send out or give to friends and family for Easter!

Happy Easter!

Coffee Filter Turkey Cards

This past weekend we made Thanksgiving cards with coffee filters, watercolor paints, and paper! I love using coffee filters for art because they are cheap and accessible!  We had quite an assembly line going and created over 20 or so cards!!! WOW!  C enjoyed making these turkey cards quite a bit!  We were inspired by Dilly Dali Art and their Spin Art Turkeys! They made Turkey Table Toppers.  Here is one of our finished cards.

First we painted coffee filters with watercolor paints.  Make sure to have newspaper underneath because they will soak through.

When the coffee filters are dry, cut them all in half like this.

Then glue the half of the coffee filter on a folded card or any paper if you don't want it to be a card.

Tear a piece of brown tissue paper (or construction paper) for the head.  We used two paper punch holes for the eyes and added black dots. You could use googly eyes too.

Now add a red piece of tissue paper for the wattle and a yellow triangle (and nostril holes) for the beak.

Finally, add lines for feathers and crumple brown tissue paper for the wings.  You could use real feathers too.  We drew the legs on and added grass for a background.  Simple and sweet! Very cute!

More cuteness!

They are adorable! Aren't they?  Don't you wish that you were receiving one?

Happy Thanksgiving!!!
