Glorious Glue Batik!!!

This is one my favorite projects we have done since writing this blog.  Such beautiful results and a fun process!  I've read about this idea so many times and so glad we finally did it!  Here is Cassie's finished Glue Batik.

For this project you'll need:
White cotton fabric
blue gel glue
acrylic paint
brushes
plastic wrap/newspaper

To begin:
First C drew her drawing carefully on the cotton fabric with a pencil.

Then, make sure to have plastic wrap underneath the fabric (or it will stick to the newspaper) and then go over your drawing with the blue gel glue.  I did this part because our glue bottle was much too difficult for C to squeeze out!!!  After outlining the drawing with glue, let dry for a day or so.

When the glue is dry,  you are ready to paint over the glue and on the fabric.  I watered down the acrylic paint a bit to make it easier to spread.  If the acrylic paint is too thick, it may chip off.  If it is too watery it may be too watery.  So mix enough water to your likeness.

Make sure to paint over the whole piece of fabric.  The blue glue parts will be the white parts of the picture. Here is C's picture ready for drying.  If you look at the back of your painting, you'll know if the glue resisted the glue.  The glue parts will be white!

Here is my flower design...ready for drying.  ***Once the painting is dry (I waited about 8 hours), soak the fabric for about 40 minutes in warm water.  Then you can take a little scrub brush (old toothbrush) and this will help to remove the remainder of the glue.  Let dry.

This is C's finished glue batik again!  I hung it on the window and it really looks vibrant!  Yet another sun catcher idea or window hanging!!

Here is my finished glue batik hanging on the window too! I LOVE these!!!

I know I will be making more of these!  SO much easier than a wax batik...which are a lot of FUN too!

Hope you get to try this too!

You'll be pleasantly surprised!

  8. I love your blog! This is a great idea, I will use this with my Sunday School students. Your blog is my primary resource for my SS crafts. Thank you for your great ideas!!!

One question about this craft; I only have an hour with my students, should I start with the glue at the beginning of class and end with the painting in part at the end of class, will this be enough time?

  9. Deb: Thanks for the compliments....it is an honor to be your source for SS Crafts.

    For the glue batik:
1st day: Draw design and put glue on fabric. Let dray till next time.

2nd day: Paint over glue with watered down acrylic paint (I used acrylic that comes in bottle so it is already liquid enough, but I added some water)
    Let this dry.

3rd day: (or do by yourself depending on the age of the kids) Let fabric soak in warm warm water for 30 minutes and scrub the remainder of glue out with a small brush (old toothbrush) Let dry.

It is a more involved project, but simple.

  13. I hopped over from your 4 Ways to Use Glue post today. I love this idea, and wondered if it would work on silk blanks (the kind we dye to make playsilks from). I think my kids would adore having some batik playsilks in their collection. Do you think the glue and paint would work just as well on that material?
