Pumpkin Puzzles

Yesterday we had fun carving pumpkins and all the things that go along with it!!  Cassie especially liked scooping out the stuff inside the pumpkins!!! I was thrilled because previous years she would not touch it! What a great sensory experience!!! C was also fascinated with the seeds and helping to carve and pull out the facial features too! The one thing she enjoyed the most was placing the pieces back into the pumpkin!!!  She said, "This is like a puzzle!!!"  So this is how our "Puzzle Pumpkins" came to be!!!!  As you can see I saved all the pieces below so she could continue the puzzles!  Be sure to check out the great links after this post relating to pumpkin carving!!!

Placing in an eye!

Now, the mouth!

Placing the top in is always fun!

This activity occupied C for at least 20 minutes or so!  She had a Great time!  I could see making some much more complicated "pumpkin puzzles" for the future!

  1. Fun!
I've always thought placing the lid on was a bit of a puzzle
Now I do it the easy way and cut a notch in it so I always know which way it goes ;)
    Thanks for sharing!

  2. That's a good way to extend the whole pumpkin carving thing into a math problem :) We haven't carved any pumpkins yet this year -- it's been in the 70's and when we carved early last year our pumpkins were all moldy before Halloween!

  3. That's great! Don't you just love it when little ones direct their own fun and learning and give you "aha" moments!? We still have one pumpkin to carve and I'm thinking I'll try to come up with a puzzle for it. Thank you for sharing!

  7. Melissa,
This is an absolutely great idea!
I will be carving a small pumpkin Monday with my children, and will have to try and keep the cutout pieces whole, and allow the children to play with it as a puzzle. This is a good way to extend the experience.
Many thanks to Cassie for the good idea!!
Happy Halloween to both of you!!
