Bath Crayons or Not???

We had so much FUN making these Bath Crayons!!!! Unfortunately,  they never really worked very well when writing with them!!! ) :  They left very faint marks and made Cassie totally disinterested! If anyone has anyone input....let me know what I could to improve them?  I tried it twice....first with Ivory soap, and then with a Glycerin Soap....both FAILED!

First the directions were to grate the soap and C absolutely LOVED this part! Her hands even got tired!

Mix one cup of soap flakes with 2 tablespoons of hot water.

Divide mixture into 6 parts.

Add the food coloring and mix! Then roll into cylinders. Let dry for a few days!

They looked really Beautiful,  but again they did not show up very well.  I tried more food coloring and it still did not seem to make a difference!

If you have had success with making your own Bath Crayons...please let me know!
I'm excited to find a recipe that will make crayons that work!!!!!

  2. Interesting project! Maybe if you add some oil? Baby bath oil? :)

  3. Yes we've tried this recipe too, only we used soap flakes so that no grating was required. With our crayons, I found that some colours worked better than others, and they all worked better when wet. You do need to use lots of colour though. I suspect you might get more effective colours if you used a stronger form of colouring than food colour, but then you run the danger of staining. Not sure what the answer is.

  4. I am so glad you posted this! We have been on the same quest too, here is our attempt: http://childhoodlist.blogspot.com/2011/08/11-bathtub-crayons.html. Our glycerin crayons were the most successful but only certain colors worked. I recently bought some gel food coloring for a birthday cake and was thinking about giving that a try and hoping it doesn't stain! If you find a good recipe please let me know. I live the idea of coloring in the bathtub and my daughters were also disappointed that it didn't work better.

  5. I never tried anything like this before, but I'll do soon, for sure. Although I think it will be better if I try it first on my own, and if it works I can repeat the experience with the kids. They will be disappointed too if their special colours don't behave properly.

  9. Food coloring is water soluble, so not suitable for coloring something waxy like soap.
