This weekend we were doing bubble activities galore: playing and printing with bubbles. Cassie enjoyed both. What inspired us to do this was when we were at friend's house and they had Crayola Colored Bubbles. When you play with these bubbles they actually are colors. This was cool, but I will warn you that these colors get all over clothes and pavement/patios. Even though they are washable I would still wear old clothes. Well, we tried to make these bubbles with paint and it didn't work. (FAIL) (Crayola must have a secret ingredient!) So I figured.... Why not create Bubble Paintings/Prints? They are so BEAUTIFUL and AMAZE me every time.
First you need some water, tempera paint, and dish soap.
We mixed about a 1/2 cup of water, 2 Tablespoons of paint, and a few squirts of dish soap in each container. We experimented and added a little more dish soap if needed! Cassie thought it was fun and enjoyed the mixing part.
Then add a straw to each container and make sure you blow into the mixture. It is like blowing bubbles in your milk or juice. Cassie LOVED this part a lot! It was an excuse to do something that she usually is told not to do.
Once you have a huge bubble foam on the top of the container you are ready to lay a paper on top to print the bubbles. The bubbles will "POP" and create a print.
Here is our best bubble print.... we made lots and lots.
I made the bubble prints into cards. They look so pretty and friends and family members are always amazed with how they were created. This technique would create Great wrapping paper too.
Now back to blowing bubbles and trying to catch them.

Lovely results! Very bright and vibrant. The first time I tried this with C (last summer) she was just a bit too young and ended up swallowing quite a lot of soapy, painted water! NOT fun! We will give it another go soon, thanks!
ReplyDeletePerfect timing. I just bought a ton of bubbles on Saturday, now I just need some tempura paint. :) BTW, those Mother's Day heart necklaces were a big hit. My mil is planning on wearing hers to church on Sunday. Thanks so much.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful colors! Love the photo of Cassie jumping for bubble joy!! We also did this last year and N also sucked up bubbles! Thank goodness for non toxic paint.
ReplyDeleteSuch lovely colors !! Love this activity:)
ReplyDelete@Anna and Rachelle, make a hole in the straw near the mouth end it prevents the paint being sucked up to some extent.
Nice post, Melissa. Cassie is having fun!
ReplyDeleteThe cards are lovely!

Beautiful Melissa! I've seen this in one of MaryAnn F. Kohl's books and have it on the list for art group but like Anna, I'm worried that the younger kids don't know how to blow through the straws, only suck so I'm saving it for an older art group.
ReplyDeleteLove the notecards you made
I have also tried the Crayola Colored Bubbles, was not really a fan because of the mess they make (even though they ARE washable) the bubbles seem really watery and I wasn't really a fan of the rubber thing you stick the wand through to get the bubble solution out.
I loved the bubble print cards and it turned out so well. I also did the same activity in my blog and it was really fun for kids but your cards turned out so good, Thanks for sharing. Check out my blog - http://blog.memetales.com/2011/05/lets-play-tissue-paper-flower-vase/
ReplyDeleteWe tried to do food coloring with regular bubbles, but it also didn't work out for us. Perhaps this technique would be worth trying out even though I keep telling daughter not to make bubbles when she drinks from a straw :) Your cards look beautiful!
ReplyDeleteMy daughter had so much fun when we did this too! It's such a great activity. I love the idea of turning them into cards. Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThese look so pretty and easy for all ages! So fun for my home daycare, now we need a nice day to try it. Rain Rain go away...

Hi!
ReplyDeleteWe tried your technique today, and I thought it would have worked just awesome if we hadn´t forgotten to actually print :)
Also, I added a little confectioners sugar to the soap mixture, because I´ve once read it makes the bubbles more stable? We tried to blow them, that didn´t work out.
Anyways, we had lots of fun, and if you´d like to see how 5 happy children in germany enjoy an idea you inspired, feel welcome to hop over to my blog :)
Another great idea! You are awesome
ReplyDeleteWhen my son was young we used Marbles dipped in paint. Use a box or a can with a lid. Lot's of fun for preschoolers and up
ReplyDeleteLove this project! Just did it with 2 daughters...they loved blowing the bubbles! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteSo much fun! The cards are very cute, what a good idea! The prints would even make a cute wraping paper for small presents!
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking up.

I just made these with my 3.5 and 1.5 year old girls and it was lots of fun! I do think I will add less water and more paint next time, as they weren't as bright as I thought they would be. My youngest daughter is a bit young and when she had a go she drank the paint, so not so good! But a great activity to do, and will definitely do it again. Thank you :)
ReplyDeletethat's really super
ReplyDeleteWow, this looks super fun! I am sure my four year old would enjoy blowing into the straw, as well!
ReplyDeleteThanks. :)
Also very fun for crafty girls to do with their craft-resistant husbands! We had a lot of fun with this last night, thank you :)
ReplyDeleteThis would look like fun for my kids, Im going to try this out on the weekend. Are watercolors the only paint that will work on this?
ReplyDeleteAwwwww. . . School day memories, awesome post. Am lovin it
ReplyDeleteAdd glycern on the shelf and cheap at the pharmacy or Walmart. It makes the bubbles blow with a bubble wand. : )
ReplyDeleteIf you use a standing bubble machine you can just hold the paper close to the blower part and make a lot of bubble paper at once. You'd have to do a few rounds with different colors, but we used the bubble machine at camp to do this when I was a kid and it worked great!
ReplyDeleteVery fun project, Tried it today and it turned out great! Fun idea!
ReplyDeletewow!!! Beautiful!!! les couleurs magnnifiques !!! good idea :)) I like :)))))
ReplyDeleteVery Nice. I love it.
ReplyDeletegreat work.. good creativity
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! But you need to quit using exclamation points for every sentence! It takes away from the meaning of the punctuation! There are several other ways to end a sentence!
ReplyDeleteSimply adorable! Just love the way the prints turned out.
ReplyDeleteI actually saw this first done on a kid's television program..Teletubies!
ReplyDeleteOh I remember doing these with my kids when they were little! I hope you'll stop by and submit this for Fun Family Crafts! http://funfamilycrafts.com
ReplyDeleteHey Aunt Moe! Have you ever heard of "Stumble Upon"? I stumbled upon this page and was very surprised to see Cassie! I'm exploring the rest of your blog.
ReplyDeleteLove,

A great idea to try with my grandson. Thank you for sharing this.

Great blog, thanks for sharing!
DeleteMy gosh that is fantastic!
ReplyDeleteI don't have any children, but am kind of a bit child myself at 21! I cannot wait to try this out! I am thinking about mixing watercolours which would make very faint impressions on papers and then with thicker diluted acrylics for darker colours to mix ontop!
AHHhhhhh Just giddy with excitement!
This sis so beautiful! Would it work with acrylics?
ReplyDeletei just did a really cool bubble activity with my kids http://www.jugglingwithkids.com/2011/08/bubble-snakes.html?spref=fb it was so much fun!
ReplyDeleteLOvely colours and fun activity too.I liked those cards very much.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for this. I enjoy making cards for family and friends, can't wait to make these bubble design cards.
ReplyDeleteI did this activity with my EC kids last year. They absolutely loved it! I think they more enjoyed blowing the bubbles and watching them grow up out of the bowl than they did the actual printing. After their bubble prints dried (for the next class session), I let them spatter paint right onto the bubble print, so they had a really cool abstract-like painting to take home. Love your blog!!
ReplyDeleteLove the colorful pictures. Really a great idea
ReplyDeleteI love this activity. I used to do this with my students with liquid watercolors instead of tempera paint and it did okay but this looks really good. New follower from http://briarroseartstudio.blogspot.com

Hi there! Your cards are beautiful! Well done. I am going thru my old, saved emails from Craft Gossilp (I can't keep up!) and came across them. I'm definitely gonna try this one! I'm always on the lookout for cool greeting-card tips.
ReplyDeleteI must give you props for being such a crafty momma. I started crafting as a little kid, then did 4H, then taught myself beading...well now, I make jewelry, art journal, do stamping and scrapbooking, photography, needlework, quilt, knit, crochet, etc. I LOVE anything artistic - it keeps me sane in a crazy world. I know my love of arts and crafts followed me out of my childhood, because my mom was crafty and made sure we had access to it. I'm sure your daughter will as well. SO props to you mom, for nuturing her creativity so well! :) I really think that art is one thing that unifies people.
Hope 2012 is a great year for you and your family. :)

Can you tell me how to make this permanent for fabric?
ReplyDeleteFantastic!! And (re: the previous poster's question), I wonder if acrylic paint would be permanent on fabric??
ReplyDeleteJust saw your wonderful bubble card post on Pinterest. As someone always looking for new card ideas I was delighted. When I can take a break from sewing aprons, I will have fun playing with this. Thanks so much. Would you like me to pin your post to Pinterest to spread word of your good work there?
ReplyDeleteThis looks cool! my kids would love it. Your blog is cute and I would probably read it regularly but there are way too many exclamation points. It sounds like you're shouting excitedly the whole time. Just keepin' it real.
ReplyDeleteI got rid of all the !!!!
